The tiger as a backpiece has always struck me as an extremely powerful image. It represents strength and courage. The tiger is sometimes chosen for protection from bad luck, evil spirits or to ward off illnesses. Tigers are said to be able to control the wind. Often times you will see them fighting Oni alongside Shoki, the demon queller.
